Welcome to the Manasota Key Association.
We are an association of homeowners and land owners on this beautiful barrier island called Manasota Key. The association has a very long and proud history dating back more than 60 years. The members and board of directors are charged with protecting preserving and enhancing the natural features and lifestyle of this "little bit of paradise".
The Constitution of the Manasota Key Association, Inc. puts our objectives this way:
To encourage and promote, through and by means of a social or community club or association, the dissemination of educational and scientific information which shall have for it purpose the preservation, conservation, protection and development of the natural resources, together with the agricultural, horticultural and bontanical potentialities of the the areas know as...Manasota Key. (Read the full Constitution by clicking here.)
In 1971, the Florida Legislature designated the Sarasota County portion of Manasota Key a Conservation District. The Manasota Key Association also helps insure that the rules of the Conservation District are communicated to residents and are being followed.
We encourage all residents of Manasota Key to join the Manasota Key Association (MKA). We think in many cases that those who have not joined are unaware of the things the MKA does to protect property values and the special life style we enjoy here. If you have a friend or neighbor who is not a member, please share this information with them. As our membership grows, so does our ability to favorably influence events on the key. Here are a few of our recent accomplishments and ongoing efforts during 2010-2011:
-
We lobbied the County to eliminate parking on the west side of the Manasota Beach Road Bridge. That parking created a dangerous traffic situation. “No Parking” signs will go up by the end of August.
-
We worked at both the County and State level to stop a proposed change to the Building Code, which would have made remodeling of older homes difficult, if not impossible. At this time we appear to have prevailed on that issue.
-
The MKA convinced the County to change an ordinance, passed at request of Siesta Key, which had placed restrictions on even our own private part of the beach.
-
After several meetings, we were able to convince the County to drop plans for a food service operation at the soon to be remodeled Manasota Beach pavilion.
-
Members of the MKA Board meet regularly with representatives of other barrier islands, elected officials, bureaucrats and others in an effort to stay informed and to strengthen our ability to influence events affecting the Key.
-
We have launched a web site (mkahoa.org) and have been making more frequent use of e mail to try to keep our members informed. Our e communications are still a “work in progress”, but our goal is to facilitate communication between members and the Board.
-
Ongoing activities include a members directory, regular trash pick up on the road, coordinating the security patrol and organizing voluntary social events to provide an opportunity to meet neighbors.
The cost of membership in the MKA is only $55 and the benefits we all gain from a strong and functional home owners association are enormous!
