Two extremely talented and accomplished writers will read just to us. John Guare won the 1991 Pulitzer Prize for “Six Degrees of Separation” and Carin Clevidence won the Rona Jaffe Foundation Writer’s Award for “The House on Salt Hay Road”.
Tours of the Historic Hermitage campus start at 4:30 and the readings will be on the beach at 5:30

PLEASE BE A GOOD NEIGHBOR
There have been reports of dogs, either unaccompanied, or with careless owners leaving feces on the beach. Please be aware that while dogs are allowed on our beach, Sarasota County ordinance SPECIFICALLY REQUIRES that an owner clean up after his pet. Further, Sarasota County ordinance requires that the dog be on a leash, or under immediate voice control of the owner. In other words, dogs are not permitted to roam the beach alone.
Beyond the law, there is an obvious element of common sense and an interest in being a good neighbor involved. Please be considerate of your neighbors and other beach goers. Stay with your dog on the beach and clean up after him every time. Your cooperation will insure that both people and dogs are able to enjoy play time on the beach.

| turtle report August 2011 |
Posted on Aug 15th, 2011
The turtle patrol reports that as of August 9th, there were 2,121 nests and 2,853 false crawls on Manasota Key. For comparison, there were 1,647 nests and 2,427 false crawls in all of 2010. So this has been a much better year for the turtles. The largest concentration of nests ( 523 ) is between 7270 and 8210. Not surprisingly, there are far fewer south of the county line, probably as a result of more human activity and severe erosion.
Although the bulk of the nesting season is past, new nests continue to be found daily. And, of course, the hatchlings are now, or soon will be making their dash for the Gulf. It is critical that we do our part in this season. Remember, lights out, or properly shielded on the beach. Beach furniture, boats and other impediments should be off the beach at night. We are so fortunate to share our beach with these magnificent creatures. With that comes the responsibility to do our part to insure they are always part of manasota Key.

A WIN FOR RESIDENTS OF MANASOTA KEY
In December we informed you of a proposed change in the Florida Building Code that would have severely restricted the amount that certain homeowners could spend on remodeling and updating existing homes. The proposal would have affected all homes seaward of the CCCL that are between 11ʼ and 19ʼ4” above mean high tide. Spending to remodel those homes would have been limited to 50% of the value of the STRUCTURE, including items necessary for hurricane protection.
